Forestway Shopping Centre is located in Frenchs Forest, NSW, approximately 13 km from the Sydney CBD. With a curated selection of 35 retail and dining establishments, anchored by Woolworths and Aldi, the client has enlisted the expertise of nettletontribe to transform this neighbourhood centre into a high-end development in the future. The initial phase of the project aims to establish the core concept and kickstart the redevelopment journey by refurbishing the existing internal mall.
Our client’s vision is to create a sophisticated and luxurious shopping experience by upgrading and introducing exciting new retailers while enhancing the overall interior design direction. Keeping in mind the future plan for internal and external redevelopment, our design outcome was holistic, allowing for seamless integration even during the staged construction process.
Inspired by the prime beach location, the design embraces the beach-to-forest transition as the guiding concept for the finishes palette. The focal point is the boardwalk, which seamlessly links the north and south areas of the centre. The design successfully achieves a harmonious balance between a relaxed beachside ambiance and a touch of understated opulence.
The space exudes a light and airy ambiance, with textural weatherboard finishes and full-height timber batten columns adorning each storefront. These elements are tastefully complemented by brass frame detailing on the storefronts and intricate trim inlay in the terrazzo flooring. Abundant natural light floods the main mall through highlight windows, creating an expansive and luminous environment.
A standout feature is the ceiling, which runs the length of the main mall, embodying the essence of a “boardwalk.” Battens at varying angles add texture and visual interest, while black channel track lighting subtly guides shoppers through the space. To emphasize the inside-outside connection, a lightbox has been incorporated to create the illusion of a skylight, anchoring the transition zone.
In areas with lower ceiling heights, a play on scale and pattern breaks down the ceiling into panels positioned at different heights to create a dynamic effect.
The design of the amenities offers a bespoke and elegant experience, serving as a striking contrast to the authentic palette in the main mall. Brighter colours distinguish the male and female facilities, and striking natural marble stone is incorporated as a prominent feature in the vanities and signage. The parents’ room adheres to the same principles of connecting with nature, featuring a soft leaf print wallpaper and a joinery tree to create a playful and inviting space for families.
The overall design appeals to a wide range of shoppers, providing them with a memorable shopping experience. Forestway Shopping Centre offers a natural and luxurious ambiance that is both unique and harmonious.
