The Aviary

The commercial precinct of Toowong is a major transport node, situated as a gateway to the western suburbs from the CBD. Located in the heart of this commercial and retail hub, The Aviary will redevelop and reinvigorate the existing site, defining a strong character that will be contemporary yet also respond to the traditional vernacular of the area’s historical context.

The mixed use development will consist of an open air plaza, activating Sherwood Road and providing a sense of community to the Toowong commercial precinct. As part of the site response, nettletontribe have proposed the public plaza to integrate with the existing urban common, whilst considering opportunities for expansion and improvements. The attached podium is then topped with a 21 storey commercial tower and 25 storey residential tower.

The length of High Street introduces sleeved shopfonts which reactivates the vibrant frontage design. Brickwork and masonry elements are used to frame these shopfronts and further define the scale of the ‘shop’ rather than the ‘building’. More broadly the towers use timber-imprinted concrete, layering of battens and perforated sunshade screens to reflect the qualities of the Queenslander vernacular with its timber, tin and latticework.
