University of the Sunshine Coast, Engineering Building

1 / 6

The Engineering Learning Hub at the University of the Sunshine Coast contributes a state of the art facility to the internationally renowned and architecturally distinctive Sippy Downs Campus. Designed in collaboration with Brewster Hjorth Architects, the project includes a world leading, immersive technology facility to extend the already comprehensive learning facilities of the Campus.

The engineering building celebrates the DNA of construction through the visual expression of its structural and service strategies. A series of laminated, timber beams and columns comprises the building’s primary structural system and establishes the basis of its architectural language. Flexible and intuitive learning spaces are woven between public and private realms to continue the University’s ambition to create spaces which foster incidental and collaborative learning.

The four storey building consists of approximately 6,550 m² (GFA) comprising visualisation theatre (combining 3D and virtual reality technologies), integrated building sensors and monitors (that feed information and data on the structural performance and sustainability of the building), science laboratories, skills studios, lecture theatre, general teaching spaces, staff offices and a clear spanning industrial building designed to house facilities which can independently test a wide range of structural materials.
