Kompiam Hospital

We believe in the necessity of sharing expertise to better the community’s environments and experiences. Throughout the last decade, various architects from our Sydney studio have contributed their time and knowledge to Dr David Mills’ and Architects Without Frontier’s (AWF) Kompiam Hospital project.

A comprehensive facility

First coming to our attention in mid-2008 through the dedication of our team member Cassie Stronach, our then Managing Director Michael Morgan met with Catherine love, who at her Chatswood practice had developed the schematic design for the hospital’s upcoming stage.

Since this initial meeting, nettletontribe has worked across the years, assisting with design development, consultant coordination and project documentation. In 2009 our project architect Lilian Simon-Arli became involved and despite since leaving the company, has been retained by nettletontribe and remained committed to the completion of the hospital.

In July 2019 Lilian travelled to the remote Mt Hagan district of Papua New Guinea to visit Kompiam Hospital and inspect the completion of the third stage, Critical Care. Of the new theatre, Lilian wrote “David was very pleased with the building. He said it was like a dream when he performed the first surgery in the new operating theatre.”

What was initially intended to be a simple ward building, is now a comprehensive facility to service the remote community of Kompiam, facilitating the unity of conflicting tribes and acting as a stabilising force in the district.
