Lady Lamington
Perched atop the highest vantage point, the prominent nurses' home continues to stand as a landmark, its inviting presence complemented by the serene garden setting it shares with the ever-developing hospital precinct. With sweeping views that ascend from the surrounding suburbs, the Lady Lamington Building remains an inspiring sight.
Nestled within the bustling Herston Quarter precinct, the Lady Lamington Building stands as a testament to time and transformation. Designed by Queensland architect Robin Dodds, this site has been a cornerstone of Brisbane’s narrative since its genesis in 1896. Over 42 years, it was constructed in five distinct stages, evolving into the revered accommodation quarters for nurses who served at the Brisbane General Hospital.
The building’s historical fabric weaves a tale of dedication and care, capturing the spirit of generations who passed through its corridors. It wasn’t until 2012, after years of quiet abandonment, that the Lady Lamington Nurses’ Home was honoured with an entry in the Queensland Heritage Register (entry no. 601903), cementing its place as a cherished icon.
In a delicate dance of preservation and innovation, nettletontribe architects have ushered the Lady Lamington into its new chapter as vibrant student accommodation. Their design pays homage to the building’s storied past, infusing new life while respectfully interacting with the heritage elements. Original colour schemes and architectural features are celebrated and refurbished internal spaces are skilfully blended with modern student living necessities.

Refurbished Heritage Lady Lamington breathes anew in the centrally positioned common areas, flourishing around the existing courtyards. These spaces invite students to unwind and forge a communal spirit, enhancing the building's legacy of nurturing those within. The inclusion of retail spaces at ground level opens onto the lively Herston Square, integrating student life with the vibrant pulse of the precinct.
