Melbourne Pathology

A major health infrastructure project is set to redefine the former Docklands Costco building at 381 Footscray Road, with the site proposed to become a new state-of-the-art pathology laboratory, research and development centre, and workplace for Melbourne Pathology, part of Sonic Healthcare.

Healthcare Hub To Transform Docklands

Designed by nettletontribe, the project will convert the former Costco building into a high-performance diagnostic facility, consolidating Melbourne Pathology’s currently dispersed operations across Collingwood, Abbotsford, North Melbourne and the CBD into one centralised Docklands location.

The proposed facility will support Melbourne Pathology’s critical role in Victoria’s healthcare system, providing pathology services to more than two million patients each year and servicing more than 5,000 public and private hospital beds, specialists and GP clinics across Melbourne and Victoria.

The project includes approximately 10,330 square metres of laboratory space, 4,710 square metres of offices, 2,920 square metres of warehouse space, and 1,095 square metres of staff amenity areas. A new internal level will increase the building’s gross floor area from approximately 30,880 square metres to 37,810 square metres.

The centre will become the main diagnostic hub for more than 300 collection centres and clinics across greater metropolitan Melbourne, supporting testing across chemistry and toxicology, cytogenetics, genomics, haematology, histology and cytology, microbiology, molecular diagnostics and immunology.

“Transforming a former big-box retail building into a highly specialised pathology and research facility is a rare and exciting design challenge. Our approach focuses on adaptive reuse, operational clarity and human-centred workplace design to create a facility that supports the pathologists, doctors, technicians and logistics teams who play such a vital role in Melbourne’s healthcare system.”
