Melonba Shopping Centre
Melonba Shopping Centre is a new 4,900 sqm neighbourhood retail destination located at the heart of one of Sydney’s rapidly growing suburban communities.
Anchored by a full-line Woolworths supermarket, the centre has been conceived as more than simply a place to shop. It is a community-focused destination that supports daily routines, strengthens local connections and contributes to the evolving identity of Melonba.
Positioned directly adjacent to a 9,000 sqm communal park and surrounded by emerging residential development, the centre has been carefully designed to respond to its setting and create a seamless relationship between retail, open space and neighbourhood life.
The design intent was to balance the operational requirements of a contemporary shopping centre and full-line supermarket with a stronger sense of place. Rather than presenting as a conventional retail development, Melonba Shopping Centre was conceived as an integrated precinct that engages with its landscape context and reflects the character of the surrounding environment.
This approach informed the overall planning of the site, the composition of the building and the experience of moving through the centre. The arrangement of the Woolworths supermarket, specialty retail tenancies, pedestrian connections and landscaped areas allows everyday shopping to feel more connected, comfortable and grounded.
Drawing inspiration from nearby Yiraaldiya National Park, the project adopts a biophilic design language that references local biodiversity, natural textures and the layered qualities of the surrounding landscape. Indigenous planting, wildlife-conscious material selection and curated public art introduce subtle environmental cues throughout the precinct, creating a sense of calm and familiarity. These elements soften the retail experience and transform a routine visit into something more welcoming and restorative.
Sustainability was considered throughout the Tender and Design Development phases, with detailed reviews undertaken to refine the Green Star pathway and improve environmental performance. Through careful evaluation of material choices and reductions in overall material consumption, both internally and externally, the project achieved more efficient construction outcomes while supporting broader sustainability goals. Designed to achieve a 4 Star Green Star rating, Melonba Shopping Centre reflects a considered approach to resource use, building performance and long-term resilience.
Located between surrounding residential neighbourhoods and adjacent parkland, the completed centre strengthens community connectivity within the growing suburb. It creates a safe and accessible meeting point where shopping, recreation and everyday movement intersect, contributing positively to the long-term growth and character of Melonba.
Materiality plays an important role in reinforcing the centre’s connection to place. A carefully considered palette of brick cladding, timber-look battens and monochrome profiled metal cladding creates a balance between durability, warmth and restraint. The materials were selected for both their visual relationship to the tones and textures of the local landscape and their ability to meet the practical requirements of a high-performing retail environment. The result is a centre that feels robust, contemporary and responsive to its context.
