As Woolworths’ first highly automated, multi-level customer fulfilment centre, it is one of Australia’s most advanced grocery fulfilment centres, redefining retail logistics through its innovative design, scale, and ambition.
Designed to address the growing demand for online grocery shopping, this fully automated, 24/7 facility leverages KNAPP’s advanced automation, smart storage solutions, and intelligent picking technologies to deliver scalable and efficient order fulfilment. Strategically situated in Sydney’s western suburbs near key transport routes and major customer catchments, it optimises fulfilment for improved customer and team outcomes.
Sustainability was foundational to the project, with features such as rooftop solar panels, energy-efficient systems, and infrastructure for an electric vehicle delivery fleet, all supporting Green Star certification standards. In addition, the integration of specialised climate zones plays a vital role to preserve product freshness across grocery categories. These zones required meticulous integration of insulation systems, refrigeration infrastructure, and thermal separation within the automation design to maintain efficiency and product safety. The internal layout was configured to streamline order flow, from goods in to goods out, with minimal manual handling, reducing turnaround time and operational friction.
The facility seamlessly separates operational and office spaces while maintaining visual harmony. The fulfilment centre features warm timber coloured aluminium battens and light warm grey precast panels that soften its look and reinforce Woolworths’ brand, complemented by signage and brick elements for street presence. The office presents a contrast with a modern, light-filled design, using Colorbond steel cladding and a two-story portal frame to prioritise team well-being while blending in with the industrial setting. Warm, natural tones such as timber-look vinyl, terracotta tiles, and indoor plants create welcoming interiors, fostering a connected and restorative workplace. This cohesive design balances technical innovation, aesthetic appeal, and human-centric spaces.
The success of the facility was driven by close collaboration with a diverse and highly skilled team of consultants, spanning both local and international expertise. Due to the project's scale and complexity, seamless coordination was crucial at every stage, from feasibility to construction.
