The Regiment takes Gold in Graphics – Environmental in DRIVENxDESIGN

We’re very proud to announce that USYD The Regiment building received Gold in Graphics – Environmental in this year’s Sydney DRIVENxDESIGN Awards.

This award celebrates creativity and innovation in the intersection of communication design and the built environment, and is concerned with the visual aspects of wayfinding, communication identity and brands, information design and shaping the idea of place.

For the University of Sydney, it is imperative that each student accommodation espouses a unique identity. As a home for students, it is important to ensure each individual feels a part of a larger community, connected both with those within the building and the University cohort. The challenge for these graphics was to create a design which organically integrated into the established overall project design look and feel, would meet the budget, and could be delivered in an accelerated timeframe. The series of design had to be cohesive in visual language, convey 3 distinct themes of place, community and learning, and suit the varying scales and proportions throughout the building.

The collaboration with both nettletontribe’s interiors and architectural team, as well as University of Sydney stakeholder engagement, was vital in establishing the strong conceptual driver behind the designs.

The use of graphics in Regiment seamlessly weaves the conceptual drivers throughout each element of the build, from the super-graphic screen wrapping the corner facade to intimate and human scaled murals placed strategically throughout the interiors. Each mural is a bespoke collage, featuring 10 locations across the University of Sydney campus, realistic illustration inspired by the historic pen sketches of Allan Gamble, and hidden symbolic tokens. These graphics bring a liveliness and personality to each space, whilst imbedding a strong sense of history, place and community.
